NRC - HIDDEN THINGS

NRC asked me to make illustrations for a weekly series of articles on 'hidden things'. The articles explore ongoing researches and investigations into various scientific fields. Microscopic hard working creatures in your backyard, stealth fighter jets, a history of particle detecting and updates on the search for consciousness in the brain, are among them. Jules Verne, the 19th century science fiction writer has a leading role in all the illustrations.

Later I turned the illustration from week 4 into a screenprint, which you can find in my shop

WEEK 1: HIDDEN CREATURES

Week 1 in the series is for an article about all the wonderous microscopic hidden creatures living in our backyards who are working hard to take care of the earth.

WEEK 2: STEALTH

Week 2 in the series is about the ever-improving technology of stealth aircraft and fighter jets to keep off the also ever-improving technology of radars trying to find them.

WEEK 3: MICRO-MINERALS

Week 3 in the series is for an article about research on the behaviour of rocks and stones, particularly in the ground underneath Groningen. This Dutch province has been continuously affected by earthquakes due to the sourcing of gas.

WEEK 4 - ALL WE DON’T KNOW

Week 4 in the series is for an article about acknowledging that there is so much out there that we don’t understand or know about. The illustration is Inspired by a story about a 2D square trying to explain to his 2D fellow citizens that he met a 3D sphere.

After finishing the series I turned this illustration into a screenprint. You can find it in my shop.

WEEK 5: CHILDRENS IMAGINATION

Week 5 of the series is for an article about the playing trends among children through different times in history and how parents never seem able to grasp these trends.

WEEK 6: HIDDEN PARTICLES

Week 6 of the series was a tough one, but also very interesting! The article was about the history of particle detecting and acceleration. What an amazing and mind-boggling field of science, physics is. I hope I did the subject justice with this illustration.

WEEK 7: HIDDEN CONSCIOUSNESS

Week 7 of the series is for an article about our ever mysterious brain and how neuroscientists are trying to unveil its mysteries. How do all these interacting cells create images and thoughts in our head? And can we find consciousness hidden somewhere in the depths?

WEEK 8: HIDDEN TUMOURS

Week 8 of the series is for an article about the hidden ‘silent’ tumours that might be in all our bodies. Because these don’t give any complaints, they are only discovered by accident or remain never found. As the re-occurring character, the illustration is inspired by photos and monuments of Jules Verne.
